URL Shorteners Pass Link Juice

This question is asked a lot by our clients and I was glad to see Matt get it as a video topic. URL shorteners do pass link juice as long as they’re 301 redirects. This makes perfect sense because Google is counting signals from the likes of Twitter and Facebook in their ranking algorithm. He specifically states Bit.ly and Goo.gl as two that work well, and as you can see we use Bit.ly here. I also recommend setting up your Analytics to work with either tracker so you know how your content is doing.

Addroid Makes Video Ads A Breeze

April 10  |  Video SEO  |   Ryan Clark

It’s hard to keep up with all the marketing hype out there, so you know we try and bring you the best. I recently caught a presentation on Vimeo for Addroid. While we usually don’t cover banner (cpm) marketing if at all ever on the Linkbuildr blog, I thought we might as well start with something fresh. Addroid is a new video banner platform that allows you to do it all at a fair price, and by fair I mean much lower than you’d expect elsewhere. I’m pretty interested by it all and I think this form of advertising is really going to be taking off, but that’s really a ‘no duh’ statement. The CEO of the company did a great presentation showcasing how Addroid works, how it all will cost and how you can get started. I also recommend following them on Twitter if you’re interested in more updates.

Social eCommerce Made Easy With VendingBox

Comments Off on Social eCommerce Made Easy With VendingBox
April 7  |  Ecommerce SEO  |   Ryan Clark

The amount of companies doing sales through Facebook and Twitter is a surprisingly large amount compared to a couple of years ago. I’m sure most of us can all remember the amazing numbers Dell pulled off back in “the day” with Twitter, so what can be done with Facebook? Well, a lot actually. Without getting into a list of sorts we’ll just be focusing on one really nice piece of social ecommerce software called VendingBox.

With the amount of time spent on Facebook, people shouldn’t really have to go far to buy products..well, in my humble opinion of course. I’m sure you online shop owners don’t mind at all either although you might be worried about having to manage another shop platform. Luckily for you and even I (who runs his own eCommerce shop), VendingBox has done a damn fine job of making this process a breeze. The features are too many to list, so if you’re interested already, check the ginormous feature’s list that they have on their site.

The look and feel of VendingBox is what really made me sign up within the first 5 minutes of being on the site, so for that, check out their oh so sexy examples. Having something that looks goods always increases sales, so that backed with your brand recognition should do wonders for sales. The compatibility with our popular shopping carts makes it accessible for a lot of people, just another feature that had me drooling quite quickly. You can pretty much sign up and have your web design team go at it, and if they can’t have it up and configured in a week then you need a new design team!

What does it cost? This is perhaps the best part for smaller shops, and a reasonable option for you big brands out there. There is no setup cost, there is no monthly fee but just a cut of your transactions. For those making really small margins, this setup perhaps isn’t the best option for your. VendingBox takes %2.9 of your sales from their software, but only if you accumulate more than $100 in monthly sales…sounds fair doesn’t it? Some of the limits at the moment are you can have up to only 1000 products listed, so that’s not too much of a downfall. I’m thankful my shop doesn’t have more than 50 products because that’s hard enough to manage! I found this great little video from Youtube user DailyNerdVids who put together a showcase of how it all comes together.

Big Brand Video Marketing: Let The Consumer Have Some Fun

April 3  |  Brand Building  |   Ryan Clark

Big brands have a huge opportunity to have a little fun with their fans. and perhaps give your viral marketing team a breather. We’re all consumers, and some of your loyalists may be armed with an HD video camera, editing skills and the creativity to pull off something amazing. You may find it worth you companies while to dabble in the more socially interactive forms of video marketing. I’ve seen dozens of big brands do commercial contests, and from that I’ve seen videos that rivaled the big firms. Throw in a prize, let the winner receive their 15 minutes of fame and everybody wins.

Every moderate to popular product out there has some sort of consumer base, right? There’s always a good reason why your product has worked its way into the lives of all those people. Youtube is a great platform to let them showcase their own talents, for example let’s take a look at a current trend. Tea is undoubtedly making a come back, especially out here on the west coast. If we can dive deeper into the niche, outside the obvious health tea, let’s take a look at Blooming Tea (aka Flowering Tea). I saw this out there, and while it’s no big budget Hollywood showcase, it’s well done and makes me want the tea pretty bad.

This is a freshly done video so it will be interesting to see where it goes. I think this video is a great example of letting the fans do a little work. This isn’t done for BloomingTea.com by any means, but I certainly would have got in touch with the producer on this one. I would personally be thrilled if I saw something of this quality come from the social web. Hopefully these videos will spread the passion the producer has for you product, and the end goal is to make others feel and understand that same ka-pow!

Force The Creativity Out: Contests

Contests are always a great way to drive social media buzz, snag some links and spread brand awareness. This should almost surely bring out the talented video editors and bring forth a lot of great content. Large brands should have no problem getting a lot of interest and participation, which is why I’m surprised at the lack of social contests. A few good prizes and recognition will go a long way so talk to your marketing department to get the ball rolling!

I always recommend to clients thinking about it to head on over to Youtube, and just have a look at the other brands that have ran a video contest. From there, you can sniff out all sorts of interesting data such as how much social media interaction was achieved, how many links were acquired and other tid bits such as video views and perhaps even an impact of traffic (via Alexa or other sites).

Youtube offers a promoted video feature which should *never* be ignored by any big brand and their typical marketing budget. A good example of a current contest via Youtube is by L’Oreal Canada, and there opening video has nearly half a million views. Those views are nothing to shake a stick at, and you can get the ROI is going to be well worth the time and effort. For the sake if this post, here’s the video with the views;

The last tip we’ll give out here is make sure you identify influential Youtube “stars” within your vertical. L’Oreal has done this and we’ve always done the same for our clients. While your company may not need the help, it is such a fresh approach that won’t cost that much at all. You’d be surprised by how many of these “Youtube Stars” jumped at the chance for the exposure, and of course some free product! Regardless, it won’t cost much and it just builds deeper roots with your fans.

I’m sure most cosmetics companies by now have noticed the sheer amount of makeup tutorials on Youtube, so congrats to them for running yet another contest. I’d recommend to companies interested in all this to keep a close eye on how it all plays out for L’Oreal. If you happen to be a cosmetics company, check out all the things this company is doing online because it’s nothing short of awesome!

Let’s Hear From You

If you’re running a contest or have in the past of this nature, we want to hear from you and I can imagine so do our readers. I wish we here at Linkbuildr have actually done one for our own company, but you know how it is…too much work going on for other people to get anything done for ourselves.

StartupCrave.com Launches & Needs Beta Testers

April 1  |  Social Networks  |   Ryan Clark

I’ve just spent that last couple of hours signing up and checking out a new social network for entrepreneurs that’s caught my interest. If the site owners are reading this and thinking, “oh no, we just got blogged about on a link building blog”, don’t worry I’m not working that angle anymore(lol). Everyone on the Linkbuildr Team is an entrepreneur, and I’ve had the pleasure of getting them on the team here. We appreciate the resources available to folks like us, and we’ll always do our part to share related news such as this launch. A lot of our clients are also in the same boat, and we know they’ll enjoy hearing about a new place to share ideas and perhaps make some businesses connections. There are a whole host of features offered on Startup Crave, so join up while the beta is free and add me to your network.

There are a whole host of features, as I mentioned, my favorite so far being the post an idea option in your user control panel. Once the site builds a large following, who knows who you’ll network with and make that idea into reality. Personally, there have been so many times I’ve needed a good programmer on board so I’ll be looking to link up here for that. There are also user forums, the ability to post videos and link up your social media accounts to spread your latest happenings. Current beta testers get to utilize all the features of Startup Crave so jump on board now while the getting is good!

Google Adds +1 Aka The Like

March 31  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

This is fresh news hot off the press, and it has be a tad worried. Google is implementing a new social feature to their search engine similar to that of Facebook’s Like button. This is most likely not going to make much of a difference, although, you never know for those locked into a heaty top 10 SERP. I won’t go into it much because the feature is pretty self explanatory, and will only be used if you’re logged into your Google account. I do see how easy this is going to be gamed by black hats, but that’s not much of a big deal either as links are already as easily spammed. I’ll let the video do the rest, or one of the 100’s of other blogs that covered this news today already…dupe filter here we come!

Google’s Spam Team’s Goals In 2011

Comments Off on Google’s Spam Team’s Goals In 2011
March 27  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

Here’s a video with Matt Cutts talking about what Google’s spam team is going to be focusing on for the rest of 2011. While they’re just finishing up the Panda update, I have been getting the hints that links will be viewed differently in the coming year. Matt does quickly mention that link quality is going to get another look, and frankly it’s about bloody time. I have a post coming out soonish on just how Google might look at links as I have a decent guess at it. Link spam works way too easily still, and paid links by large companies seem to go unnoticed in large amounts. A quick look at any financial keyword’s top 10 listings will prove that theory within a minute, easy. I’m glad to hear that some more change is coming, and I can imagine it’s going to cause all sorts of fun (ie Panda update) for webmasters around the world.

March 27  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

We use nothing but Hootsuite here at Linkbuildr, and them being a local company makes it even sweeter. I love the web version which I use everyday, and the mobile version doesn’t fall too far behind. The software is a god send and the new social analytics features look like a helpful addition to the overall set of resources within this web app. The main attraction to these features is the ability to garner real time happenings during your social media campaigns. There are just over 30 new features that will let you make all sorts of crazy awesome reports, things your boss will love as well as your knowledge of any given campaign.
