Link Building Reads For Mid May 2010
I’ve been feverously reading some bloody fantastic articles on link building this month and I might as well do it, even though Wiep does it so much better. The Summer season seems to be hitting Vancouver already, so you can imagine I had to fight the urge to get all this reading done! The face of marketing online is changing at a scary pace, and link building has an interesting future ahead. Due to this, I’ve been working on a few posts in regards to link building + real time marketing + who cares about link juice, so look out for that article soon. If you folks think I missed out on a must read article, drop it in the comments and I’ll be sure to link it up. Just make sure you don’t send me shit!
First up I’d like to thank all the folks at the Search Engine Journal and Search and Social for putting on the Web Awards, and thanks to all who voted. I came in 3rd for best link building blog of 2010 and couldn’t be more happy, especially since I’ve had a slower writing year. Debra Mastaler came in 1st place, and Wiep easily snagged second and I just sneaked into 3rd. The competition that was up was hard to match and the other blogs in the awards such as Eric Ward and Garrett French should be bookmarked right friggin now!

Google Follows Twitter Links?
Well it is not secret that Google doesn’t always pay attention to the nofollow code. Don’t believe me? That’s fine I don’t really care. There’s nothing wrong with a nofollow link in the first place, at least that’s what I think. You have to have them, they’re natural and they make your link profile look good, so what’s going on with Twitter here? Well I’ve done my own testing, so should you, but some folks at Webmaster World got a discussion going on about Twitter links. Seems a brand new site was indexed and ranked pretty quickly from just a Tweet…let me know what you think.

Real Estate Link Building With Student Housing
This is just a quick little real estate link building tip agents can think about, and hopefully put into action for their website. Getting .EDU links is always held higher in the minds of SEO`s and webmasters, while this is mostly true, keep in mind why they`re sought after. Because with that being said, it is very possible to get a low quality link from a .EDU domain. Spammers have ruined a lot of pages within the university space going after open blogs, forums and guest comment forms..the usual. This tip is fresh, can`t be abused by every other niche on the market so I feel it`s worth discussing in public.
I recently helped a real estate agent client of mine get a few links from local universities by offering student housing web services. There are usually many houses open with a lower rent for students, so we created some content to help attract links from the .EDU TLD. The client had a resource center written up with a quick and cool PHP based tool to search for both students and renters. Basically we created a database both users could come and look for places, or submit your student housing resource into the mix. That combined with a huge article knowledge based on student housing resulted in a few juicy links.
So how did we actually get the links? Well, that`s where I came into play and emailed the appropriate departments about the resource. Most universities have a student housing resource section, so look around to see if something in your area exists. I recommend playing around with this Google command to get you started.
New York Times Online Paid Experiment: Let’s Watch
So the New York Times has announced that it will be charging for content on their website, a last ditch effort to make some money perhaps. The NYT does do pretty much all of its reporting, so you can see why they might be wanting to try this effort out. I for one, think it`s going to flop like just about every other attempt like this attempted. What is different however, is that the NYTimes.com website been seeing a lot of growth in the past 5 months, and hopefully this doesn`t hurt that effort. With a lot more popular content going away from the Google Index, I wonder if they`ll still manage to keep organic traffic up.
I think this is a great opportunity from a marketing and SEO perspective because we can monitor any changes, without footing the bill of course. I`m also wondering about how much organic and social media traffic they`ll lose to those big stories. I`ve seen other paid newspapers have there paid content landing pages rank well in Google, and that pissed me off quite a bit, so hopefully we don`t see that here.
