Strange Google Listing Result

April 28  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

I was just Googling around for some local search stuff, non client related when I came across this strange anomaly within the SERPs. Forgive me if this isn’t something new, but I’ve never seen a Google listing pick up those characters from on page like this before, and it surely caught my eye. The link goes to a local Craigslist ad in which you can see why Google picked this up and is now showing it as is…so strange! Anyone got anything to say about this?

Link Builders Toolkit For Your Business

April 27  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

I recently had the pleasure in reviewing Mark Thompsons new link building goldmine for businesses of all sizes. I imagine Mark’s target market are the smaller to medium sized businesses who don’t have the budget for a consultant, or in house SEO. Instead, if you have sometime and Internet know-how, you’ll be able to kick off a pretty damn impressive link building campaign all on your own.

This toolkit is designed to make link building a straight forward process with an easy to follow system that you can manage on your down time. I’d recommend setting a goal for doing only so many tasks per day, getting in done in the mornings, your lunch hour or after hours. After a couple months your site should be dominating the local search market, your niche or whatever you’re going after.

What I really like about the toolkit is the diversity. You get the usual good stuff like directories, bookmarking sites, PR sites, coupon sites and SO much more. The second best part? All of it has been filtered for quality so you know you’re not wasting your time submitting to low end websites.

  • Over 160 Blog Directories (Download the Blog Directories Tab for Free!)
  • Over 30 Classified Sites
  • Over 100 Content Sharing Sites
  • Over 80 Coupon/Deal Sites
  • Over 400 Directories
  • Over 40 eBook Sites
  • Over 25 Event Sites
  • Over 30 Forum Sites
  • Over 50 Local Sites
  • Over 40 Photo Sharing Sites
  • Over 35 Podcast Sites
  • Over 300 PR/Article Submission Sites
  • Over 35 Q&A Communities
  • Over 65 Review Sites
  • Over 60 RSS Submission Sites
  • Over 50 Social Bookmarking Sites
  • Over 50 Social Community Sites
  • Over 45 Shopping Sites
  • Over 35 Twitter Sites
  • Over 35 Video Sharing Sites
  • Over 60 Free Website Creation Sites
  • Over 15 Wiki Sites

As you can see this is a killer list that will take some time to complete.  I highly recommend taking the time to put the effort into your link building time here, and make sure to create quality content to spread around. A lot of these link building methods will require the content, so be prepared to factor that into either cost or time on your behalf. When you think about it, it’s still WAY cheaper than hiring me or another consultant.

Lane Bryant Banned Commercial = My Favorite Viral Marketing

April 25  |  Viral Marketing  |   Ryan Clark

Sex sells, and I’m quite fine with that. Lane Bryant seems to know its niche well, and when you’re in the lingerie business, it’s not hard to sell sexy. Combine that with a racy commercial that gets banned and a 40% discount, and you got yourself a viral marketing hit. This commercial wasn’t allowed on the air by Fox or ABC, but Youtube has it currently at 1.7 million views and counting. This is another clear cut example of how regular television just isn’t effective, and surely fears this style of marketing. This commercial will most likely see another million views and will have surely paid off itself a few times over.

This is proof in action that content is king, and if you’re in the position to create content like this for your brand don’t hesitate. You can only imagine the type of links they’re receive from this campaign. CNN, blogs, news sites, social networks and video sites galore have all got it mentioned which has resulted in a next level boost in targeted traffic. I thought this campaign was a great example of viral marketing that was still somewhat fresh and in the mix.

I have no clue why they were banned but I don’t think I would have cared all that much if I were doing their marketing. They’re actively engaging the situation via all social media channels, and I commend their efforts! You can see from a nifty little web tool called Twitterholic that within a year they’ve managed to leverage a nice targeted social media following. I hope you folks take this example in deep, because it is a perfect example of getting brand awareness and maximum link acquisition in one go.

Conan + Twitter Office = Linkbait Wet Dream

I just read about how Conan O Brian dropped in on the Twitter HQ’s in San Francisco earlier this morning, and it got me thinking. Can you imagine if you had access to this kind of viral marketing? I’m going to be watching closely what impact this has on not only Mashable, but Twitter link wise. I’m really interested to see how many links this will net them in a 24-48 hour period, what do you folks think? I would be a happy man to not have to worry about link building with this kind of networking going on, so is this making any of you think?

I imagine if you’re in the local search market, even a little interview with a local celebrity would go a long way in your linking efforts. This is the type of marketing I like to see happen for a few reasons. This isn’t costing them any money, your users do the link building for you and you’ll even enjoy some branding in the process. Last but not least, you’re also doing something your competitors most likely cannot copy. That marketing, and those links will be a wicked asset to your online ranking efforts and keep the competitor’s in your dust.

BuddyPress (WordPress) Advanced SEO Plugin

BuddyPress SEO

I happily use and recommend BuddyPress for any social media venture you might be thinking about. BuddyPress is basically a condom if you will, on top of WordPress acting much more social that she usually is. The features are endless, the plugins are plenty, and my latest tryout is the BP Advanced SEO plugin by Boris Glumpler. This plugin will handle the day to day on page of your index, archive pages, member pages etc. BP Advanced SEO also allows you to do a couple helpful things with your blog posts. You can of course write your own descriptions, SEO titles..the usual good stuff. If you forget to add the on page SEO in yourself, this plugin will generate its own keywords by combining post tags and other user data.

BuzzStream Adds Some New Link Building Features

April 21  |  Link Building Tools  |   Ryan Clark

BuzzStream is a must have tool for any search marketing consultant out there, never mind us link builders. With that being said, they now have some really cool new backlink analysis tools on the market. I was quite pleased to see how they`re actively monitoring certain key elements if your link campaign, a feature which most other tools are not doing. BuzzStream now emails you on changes such as when a link goes from followed to nofollow. This is just the next step of total link management and if you`re in a heated niche, this information is going to give you the advantage. I can also see this being used to monitor your competitors as well…oh the possibilities!

  • Changes to the page it is linking
  • Changes to nofolllow/dofollow status
  • Changes to anchor text
  • Changes to the number of outbound links on the pages
