Travel SEO & Internet Marketing Guide

February 26  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

After posting my business startup marketing guide I got inspired to write something out in the similar fashion, but for the travel industry. I’ve spent a lot of my years affiliate marketing within the travel industry so I have a rather large list of places to market online. I’ve also introduced my new Travel SEO & Internet Marketing Services to the list of consulting I’m doing, so if you need help don’t hesitate to get in touch.

There are a lot of different avenues one can take when marketing online for the travel industry, and the tips provide below are just he tip of the iceberg. I’ve kept a lot of things for my clients only, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find a plethora of options available to you. Another aspect about the online travel industry is fact that there are so many different keywords you can target. I hope you can get a lot of good use out of this post, and if you have anything to add feel free to add it in the comments below.

Travel Related Forums:

I’ve found over the years that getting heavily involved within the few major travel forums around your niche has paid off big time. I’m actually talking about becoming an active member, and not being there just for the signature link. Answering people’s questions about your destination and posting new and cool information can naturally lead a lot of clients your way. There are a lot of people using forums to plan their trip and gather some information these days, so make sure you’re not missing out. I’ll only be listing the major travel forum hubs, but make sure to check for ones within your area you’re marketing to. If there isn’t one, it would be a great asset to your company to start one up.

Virtual Tourist is one the of the largest travel and tourism sites on the web, and they also have one of the largest travel forums. The forum software used is perhaps the least web friendly I’ve seen, and I’m not sure why they didn’t go with something like PHPBB or Vbulletin. You can’t build links but you can help travelers out with their questions and post text only links to resources that would help them out.

The world famous Lonely Planet of course has one of the largest travel forums on the web, and like Virtual Tourist, has some less than desirable forum software running it. It is a tad bit better in respect to the ability to post dofollow links. Those links can only be related to the post, so don’t expect to get away with any sort of spamming.

The Travel Blog is one of my favorite places to read amazing and real travel stories, and they also have a huge forum that’s very active. It’s a great place to make friends and talk travel all day long, you can also get a blog here, share pictures and more. I usually will write blog posts on my personal blog on the site, and then link from the forum to it. You can have links within your blog posts so I just let the juice flow into them.

Travel Blog Hosts:

There are a huge number of travel specialized blog hosts that will allow you to blog your heart away. This is great because you can setup a niche blog network and pass in the Google link love from a few different sources. This is great in the long run because you’re not only getting links, but you’re getting them from travel related sites which makes them all the better.

TravelPod is the first free travel blog host I’ll mention because I used it to keep my family and friends updated on my last trip to Europe. TravelPod is a great free blogging resource that has been around a long time, and lets you get dofollow links within your posts. Since it’s so authoritative it also ranks well for a lot of longtail keywords, so if you write some great content you’ll see it go a long way.

TravellersPoint is another one of the largest travel sites on the web, and they allow you your own blog on a subdomain. This is a great place to write a great blog that can feed your main website once and a while. The content has to be good and you won’t get away with spamming for long, so don’t bother trying.

GetJealous.com is quite possibly my favorite travel blog host for both writing on, as well wasting tons of hours reading other people’s blog entries. This host lets you insert dofollow links into your post, as well pictures, video and maps. You can really create a great blog on here to use for marketing, or writing your own travel blog for fun.

RealTravel.com has been named one of the must read travel blog sites on the web and has huge numbers of users and excellent content. It is also another great free blog platform that allows dofollow links within your content. The platform also allows for a ton of easily implemented media such as maps, video and images.

Travel Social Bookmarking:

Well most of the normal social bookmarking sites will do in your case, there are a few travel related bookmarking sites out there that are worth mentioning. If anyone out there is listening, now would be a great time to make an amazing travel bookmarking site because there’s a need…badly.

Travel Mills is the first travel bookmarking site on my list and sadly seems to be overrun with spam these days. The other problem is that the links are masked so you don’t get any dofollow link love from the site, but it’s still getting a decent amount of travel traffic trickling in. My advice to you is to experiment with it and see if it brings in any traffic at all.

Voteitfly.com is another Pligg based travel bookmarking site that seems to have been run down by lousy submissions. I’m not sure if its just that spammers rule the web, or travelers don’t seem too interested in using social bookmarking sites. This site also has masked links so you don’t get any link love, but I will say there seems to be a lot more travel based links making it on here.

TravelBeen.com is perhaps the most promising travel bookmarking site that is also a social search engine for travel. This site has a lot of activity, void of spammers and you can submit your site for free. Your site does go into review, so if you have a quality site you shouldn’t have much to worry about. You can also add your own bookmarks as a user of the site, just check out your user profile after you’ve logged in.

Reddit’s Travel Section is perhaps the best kept secret to your travel marketing efforts. This is one of the best places to make a viral article to submit to. You’re best best is with pictures, videos, or a combination of both with a writeup. The links are powerful and dofollow, and if you get enough votes you’ll see a lot of traffic. This traffic won’t convert for any offers because it’s reddit, but that shouldn’t be your goal. Create very cool content and hopefully getting listed here will help it virally.

Classified Ads For Marketing:

As some of you may know this section is taken straight from my Business Startup Marketing Guide and I changed some of the wording around. All of these great resources have a travel section where agents can post travel deals and specials, so why miss out? I’ve had a lot of great traffic come from these sites over the years and they actually come back for more.

Craigslist.org is the obvious first and foremost place to advertise your travel deals and specials to local consumers. The reason it’s the best its of course its size, and you can take advantage of not just local classifieds, but hit up any city on the face of the planet. You’ll need an account signed up with your phone number, so you won’t be able to spam. I usually make a few accounts with my mobile number, office number and home number so it gives me flexibility in the amount of ads I can release daily.

Ilist.com is a budding classified system that has been dipped in the web 2.0 life pond and has seen some strong growth. This is one of the only new classified sites out there that seems to be filling up with a lot of users, oh and you can get a link as well. They also require a phone number to make an account, but that’s just a sign of quality.

Backpage.com is perhaps the second largest classified site online with a sub 1500 Alexa ranking, and a lot of growth in the past six months. The sign up process is like most others and does offer dofollow links within their ads. It’s a great place to attract business and I’ve personally had a lot of success in getting clients.

Jicka.com is a relatively new online classifieds site with a web 2.0 twist, but has not managed to attract a lot of users just yet. It isn’t easy to grow a classified site when there are so many others out there. Some cities have a small amount of ads, but this is also an opportunity to have your stand out. If the site does start to grow you’ll have your ad out front for a while.

Travel Directories:

This is just a small number of the huge amount of quality(surprisingly) travel directories out there. I’ll be naming a few, but I’m going to be doing a separate post soon with a list of all the biggest from around the world. I’ll only be listing the ones that are of top notch quality and don’t require you to pay to get in. Sadly, most of the directory owners still force you to do reciprical linking which is usually frowned upon these days. If you decide to recip, keep it to a minimum, only the quality sites and make sure they’re travel related.

Traveldirectory.org.uk is not just UK specific and has a ton of categories for world travel. It ranks in the top 3 for travel directory on Google, has a pagerank of 4 and seems to get a good amount of traffic. The site itself is very clean and well edited so you better have a quality site in order to get approved.

Travel-directory.org is an old and still somewhat authoritative travel directory that’s free to sign up to, although you have to sign up for an account. The site is a pagerank of 4 and has been running for just about 7 years now, so you know it has got some juice. This site is also clean in its layout and has mostly quality submissions.

Link Building With Travel Blogs:

There are a few methods I use either with a blog, or other people’s travel blogs on the web. These methods you have to go about carefully and make sure you’re in it to be involved within the travel community. I usually make my own list of related travel blogs and setup Google alerts for my topic to keep me on the ball.

The first tactic is none other than good ole blog commenting on quality related niche blogs. I never care about do/nofollow and always get involved with the topic. I make sure to me notified when I’m replied to and I’ve made a few dozen amazing contacts this way. This tactic should be done in most link building campaigns.

Second up only works if you own a review site or blog for a certain niche in the travel industry. For one of my sites which talks about travel in certain region, I contact a dozen owners of B&B’s, cottage owners and ski resorts to do reviews for them. I usually always get a link in their resources section and they have proven to be the most authoritative links in my profile.

If you own something like a B&B, mountain chalet or something within your region then you should be reaching out to bloggers. You should have no problem finding local travel blogs where you can either pay for a review, submit a guest post or email the owner for a link to your website. You’ll find that most people are more than willing to do one of the above three options!

Travel Social Networks:

There are a huge number of travel social networks out there, some have features like blogging, profiles and bookmarkin all built in. It takes time to sift through the vast list of them to find out the ones you can market with, so keep an eye out and take some time to discover hidden gems on your own.

GeckoGo is a unique travel social network with the works when it comes to content. Everything from bookmarks, traveler profiles, maps, videos, photos and more. My favorite features as a travel marketer is that you can add your travel desitnation with a dofollow link included! Do submit your travel business with their easy online form.

Trazzler is a really cool travel site that is full of the usual travel media and lets you become a site blogger. You have to own a blog or travel business, and once accepted you get a blogger profile and the ability to write travel guides for your area. If you get picked you’re in luck because the links are dofollow, but the content has to rock!

Trip Shake is a really cool social network that is mainly a travel questions and answers site. It’s a great place to help people out and look for people asking questions about your travel industry. You can answer with links which will bring in targeted traffic. The site has been taking off lately so I recommend giving it a try!

Thanks for reading this long post and remember this is just a really small dose of what is fully out there. I could write guides just as big for each smaller travel niche out there, so think outside the box and find your own custom online marketing guide. If you want me to handle your online marketing for travel then check out my Travel SEO & Marketing page for rates and contact information.

LinkVoodoo Backlink Analyzer Update

February 23  |  Link Building Tools  |   Ryan Clark

Just a little update on the latest updates on our SEO Tools and what we’ve got implemented, as well what we’ve got coming in the coming 10 days(or so). First up I’d like to let everyone know about the updates we’ve made to the instructions on how to use the backlink analyzer. Some people have been confused with getting the launch.php to run, or have just straight up had problems getting it to run. So we’ve added in these instructions seen below, let us know if everything worked fine for you;

We’re hoping this clears things up a little and helps most people run the tool without any problems. We’re also working on getting a feedback system in place that will archive users questions, and our answers. We’re also thinking of adding in a forum sooner than later so people can discuss any problems with the tool, and with link building in general. The next update we added this week was the addition of the dofollow and nofollow reporting on all the links. You can see them tallied up at the top right, as well the reporting within the link list you get once you’ve run the software.

This is the key numbers list that gives you a quick tally of the numbers that are most important, and now as you can see they’re including the do/nofollow count. From here you can see which links are dofollow or nofollow under each link set for each domain. If you notice any problems with the reporting please let us know so we can make sure everything is running smoothly. We really rely on your feedback to fix issues and make the software better.

Link Building With PicsorLinks.com

February 23  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

I’ve just run across this really cool social media site called PicsorLinks.com and I’ve been hooked! I know I am a link builder and a lot of sites hate to see me coming, but this one I’ve been using for fun without a thought of work…yet. This site could be seen as a few different things, a blog, a pictures sharing site and or a video sharing site or all of the above. You’ll quickly get the idea the first time you visit and you’ll not only waste some time browsing the interesting stuff people are posting, but most likely have something fun to share as well.

Now once you’ve spent some time signing up and browsing about, start to take notice of the different ways of link building and marketing you can do with this site. First off all the links within you post are dofollow, so take note of the type of content on here before putting up some crap. This site is geared towards entertainment and news, so not everyone will be able to use this service without coming off as a spammer. So not only is their link building, you can also promote something with a really good video or picture to make the post stand out. This service is pretty new so there isn’t much link juice now, but I can see this site gaining a lot of popularity quickly in the near future. So remember to put up great unique content, and please do not go and spam this great service.

Link Building With ClikBall.com

February 22  |  Link Building, Social Bookmarking  |   Ryan Clark

Hey everyone…it’s been a while since I updated with some link building tips so I’ve finally found some time to do a few posts. I’ll be starting off with this really cool new site I’ve just stumbled on tonight called Clikball. This site is relatively new on the block but has grouped a whole whack of features I really wanted to see together. It’s essentially a way of sharing top notch content, whether that be funny, weird or breaking news. It also is layed out like a social bookmarking site but combines twitter like followers and easy sharing with friends. This is a great platform to utilize and I hope it becomes very popular. Sadly the plugin didn’t work on Ubuntu with Firefox 3 so I can’t Clikball from my main laptop, so I’ll be testing it out when I’m on my windows box which is not very often.

So getting on with the post here, how can you benefit from using Clikball? Well for starters you get a public profile which includes a nofollow link to your website or blog, and secondly all the links you add are dofollow so they’ll count as a backlink. Remember folks, this is a site for premium content so don’t expect your spam to last long. People with news and entertainment websites will benefit the most from using this service and I strongly warn spammers from abusing this system. So if you’re using this site normally remember to follow others, attract followers and you’ll benefit in the long run when your user page gets indexed.

Business Startup Marketing Guide

February 14  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

To kick off my new business startup marketing services I wanted to put down on digital paper a guide for all those who either can’t afford my services, or want to give it a go on their own. Thanks to the web, social media and viral marketing anyone can make their business startup succeed in a crowded marketplace.

Since the explosion of web 2.0 there has been a rise in the number of sites talking about business startups on the web. This makes life a lot easier in getting a huge jump on not only your new businesses web presence, but gives your domain a boost by building links while you do it. I’ll also be covering other resources like forums, books and magazines that will help you keep inspired as you go along.

First things first, always sit down and write out a game plan for the next week ahead. The idea behind this post is to get the word out about your web business while building links to give it a boost. I always make a checklist of all the places I’m going to build links that I can rattle off the top of my head. Next open up your textpad and write down the business name, url, address, phone number and a well written description. A lot of the startup sites we will be visiting will require most of this, so it’s good to have the copy+paste ready to go. I would also recommend writing up 2-3 amazing articles about your business, or a topic related to your business.

Now we can finally get to the good stuff. I haven’t released every resource and tip I have in my arsenal because I’ve left a lot of it for my business startup marketing services. This post should contain enough information to get you well on your way while leaving you time to focus on your business. If you find you don’t have the time you know who to call!

Places To Submit Your Startup:

Killerstartups.com is one of the first places you should go to see if you product passes the test. You get reviewed by an actual human, and if you get listed here it will start to drive in some quality traffic as well give you an image link. You can also pay for a speedy and more indepth review, not necessary but recommended.

CrunchBase.com is an amazing free services provided by the great folks at TechCrunch. This business directory is the place to be for anyone with a quality product, and submissions are human reviewed. The quality is unsurpassed in not only the business listing, but how the entire site is laid out. You have many options from adding your business to making a personal profile. This is a must stop on your weekly routine.

Mashable.com is no stranger to most people and they do accept news on launches and updates. Getting listed on here isn’t easy and you better have one helluva concept working for you. With over 200,000 rss feed subscribers you can bet you’ll get some attention as well a whole lot of links. I think it’s best your read Mashables guide called 12 Tips for Getting Your Startup Featured on Mashable.

Feedmyapp.com is a well known site to get your web 2.0 app or business listed. The review process is quick and you can get a nice link along with some traffic to your startup. The traffic to their site has dipped in the recent while, but it is still a great place to get listed. Good news though is that they have a Feedmyapp for just about every major language under their respected domain country codes.

Startup-companies.com is a web 2.0 blogish style site that allows you to submit your start up for free coverage. Unlike a lot of other sites, this one makes you email your application apposed to filling out an online form. The site is relatively new but the owners have been hard at work writing about the latest web ventures.

Acestartups.com is another great resource for submitting your web startup online and is free of charge. If you’re lucky enough to get listed on here you get a nice written review and a link via your logo which you’ll need to submit. This site is also relatively new but the content is flowing and you’ll get tweeted as well once submitted.

Mykillerstartup.com is a social news and bookmarking site for new startups. It is not dofollow but you still get a link so it might be worth your time to submit. I’m not sure if they’re related to killerstartups, but something tells me they are not. By the looks of it it only takes a couple votes to hit the frontpage.

Startupnewz.com is another digg/social bookmarking style site that is dofollow and seems to have the most activity out of all them. Registration is free and you need about 4-5 votes to hit the front page, but the links are dofollow so it’s also worth it from a link building point of view.

Startup Forums/Chat:

Once you’re on your way to marketing and growing your business it helps to stay connected and immersed in the market. Getting involved in online startup forums and business social networking can do the job. If you make a strong inpact in these types of places you’ll never come out empty handed, and most likely make a business connection that makes a big impact on your business.

Startup Nation is a complete web community that has an entire forum base focused on startups and new businesses. Not only is it just one of the top startup forums, it is also filled with articles and information on starting and growing your business. Startup Nation is also filled with blogs that contain a wealth of information for the new business owner.

Business Startup Community UK is dedicated to startup businesses in the UK so the target audience isn’t global. That doesn’t mean the content is irrelavent, and if you’re looking to expand and partner your business over seas this might be a great option for networking. Besides a big user forum there are blogs, articles and a job board.

Startup Phase is another forum dedicated to startups that has a few hundred members that are decently active. This site is a bare bones forum so it doesn’t have the other advantages of articles and blogs.

Business Social Networking:

There are a handful of amazing social networking sites out there dedicated to business and online professionals. These are a great way to get connected and stay connected while you grow your business. I find a lot of connections and business through a few of these I’ve listed below and I urge you to take the time to become a member.

Smarta.com is a relatively new online network for business owners, and it is backed by one of the folks from Dragon’s Den. You can become a member and network with other business owners while getting advice and live help from professionals of all areas of business. I really like the video lectures that are offered on site.

BigSight.org is a directory of people heavily populated by business owners, professionals and people that lead. You can created nice minimal style user pages that allow you to describe who you are, and what you do. As an added bonus the links produced throughout your profile or blog are all dofollow, and your page will get indexed in Google. If you don’t want to fill out your profile you can populate it with your Facebook stream and kill two birds with one stone.

Gooruze.com is a place to connect with online marketers, and if you don’t fancy yourself one then you’re wrong about yourself. Even though you may be new to all this you’ll find Gooruze has a lot of talented online marketers that can guide you on your way. You can build up an amazing profile and take advantage of the dofollow links as well reading other articles and business networking.

LinkedIn.com almost doesn’t have to be mentioned, but just in case you’re really new to the online business networking scene, I might has well have my bases covered. LinkedIn is the place to be for networking with related professionals and you’ll find a huge number of groups related to your topic. You also get a public profile that provides an auhoritative link back to a few of your websites.

FastPitchNtworking.com is one of the fastes growing business social networks on the scene that has a huge member base. You get fully featured profile that does get indexed in Google, but they have really poor url structuring so they lose points from me on that. The FastPitch Network is filled with all the usual goodies such as blogs, live chat and even a classifieds section.

Classified Ads:

A lot of startups cater to the world at large, but a lot of them also do a lot of local business. Whether its both you can utilize online classified ads to gain some business. A lot of the newer web 2.0 classified sites also allow you to obtain some backlinks which makes it worth your while. I highly recommend using Google Trends to determine which cities are searching for your product or service the most, and then target them the hardest.

Craigslist.org is the obvious first and foremost place to advertise your business online for local clients.

Business Directories, Reviews And Promotion Sites:

There are so many different business related sites that let you give/get reviews on your buniness, get links from business directories as well from other cool web 2.0 business sites. These are just a taste of the huge list I use for my clients, but if you look hard enough you’ll find all sorts of interesting avenues of promotion and link building.

JobeeHive.com is a web 2.0 business review site that also allows people to compare salaries. It’s a great place to see what other companies are up to and as well submit your business for review. You might have to prepare yourself for trollers, or even a bad review but you can reward your site with a dofollow link.

Insiderspages.com is a really cool local business review site with a ton of activity and traffic, so its a must on my list. The business profiles are really well done out and include just about everything you’d want to see including Google Maps as well dofollow links for your business. I’d recommend encouraging users and customers to review your business on there.

Yahoo Local is a must for just about every business out there because it provides you with some link love, business listing love and addition into Yahoo Maps. There are so many web apps out there that use Yahoo Maps API and there’s a good chance your business will pick up some links from sites that use it.

MerchantCirlce.com is a popular online place to promote your business for many different reasons. Since there are already near 250,000 businesses listed in MerchantCirlce, you know that the search traffic is massive. You get an amazing company profile that includes dofollow links, blogs, coupons and more. You get the full meal deal with this site!

TouchLocal.com is another web 2.0 business directory and review site that has a huge user base. They have seen a lot of growth lately, and is a great place to get your business listed. You can attract customers but you won’t be able to get links from this site which seems strange in this day and age.

Well I hope this helped you jump start your venture as well lead you down the path of discovering other ways to promote your business online. If anyone would like to add something great just leave it in the comments and I will approve it. If you would like to hire me to help you launch your startup you can check out my page on Business Startup Marketing Services.

Backlink Checking With Link Voodoo

February 10  |  Link Building Tools, News  |   Ryan Clark

Well we’ve finally launched the public beta version of our backlink analyzer which is still in early development. We’ve tested it on Linux(Ubuntu), MacOSX, Vista and XP so it should run fine on most computers if they have Java installed. We are encouring anyone to leave feedback and comments so we can tweak and improve the software as we go along.

The software runs in two different modes, quick run and full run. The quick run checks a sites entire backlink profile but only reports back one unique anchor text link per domain, instead of the full run which will report site wide links. Yahoo Site Explorer reports everything and we found that this is usually annoying to sift through. We will be soon adding a sorting function that will allow you to list the results by PageRank or Alexa Rank.

If you input your domain and there are already results that means someone has already run your domain through the backlink analyzer. You can choose to view the data or click the “update data” button to scan for new links that may not be listed. This will relaunch the Java app and gather all the new links, and once it’s finished you can refresh the page or click the update option on screen to usher in the new or updated results.

The Pro Tools portion of Link Voodoo will be rolling out the first part after this section has been thoroughly abused by you and me. I still can’t go into details on what those features will be, but trust me they’re going to be schweeeeet.

Link Building With Crunchbase.com

CrunchBase is a product of TechCrunch and is a great resource for listing your business, startup or web app. The business directory is very cleanly designed and easy to flow around, and if you take a peek at a business listing you’ll notice you get a do follow link. CrunchBase is not a free for all, you have to be a related company and go through a reviewing process. It is completely free which is great, you get the link from a very authoritative site and the chance to attract some business or capital.

If you’re a consultant or provide services you’ll be happy to know you can add your services to CrunchBase, as well make your own personal profile which links back to your service or company. Person profiles also include the luxury of a link, as well links to your social media pages which helps give them some extra juice.

Link Building With Eioba.com

February 10  |  Link Building, Social Media Sites  |   Ryan Clark

I was checking out new content sites and came across this wonderful web 2.0 knowledge sharing website called Eioba.com. This easy to use and navigate site has a blend of articles sites, social networking and social voting on the content. The social voting built into the site sets them apart from a lot of other article sites, and I don’t think I can even get away with calling them an article site. This is a site you won’t be able to get crappy content onto, so make sure you’re there to write some quality and unique content.

Eioba is great for promoting top notch content because they allow you to get a dofollow link within your article, and if it gets pushed to the front page you’ll push more weight to that link. If you start to become an expert, you can promote your own blog a lot more and gain fans and friends on the site. I highly recommend signing up and giving it a try by writing a few articles and voting.
