Geoff and I (Ryan) had a blast this weekend with the Excel Tire Company for their AGM. We had the pleasure of speaking to the company about the delights, and blights of marketing online as they shy away from print advertising and media. While we had to talk to a room full of owners and staff who had all ready taken in over 8 hours of meetings, we’d like to thank them for their patience and time.

We’ve been helping their company re-brand themselves and get not only a more more search engine friendly web platform, but something more socially integrated. This is obviously a hot topic for businesses in all local communities, and they’re certainly taking it to a level above their competition. While you can imagine the last thing on a mechanics mind is sending out a tweet to his peeps, they certainly embraced the options we presented during our speech. The theme was to help them understand how they can reach a more targeted local user, both with a nicely built WordPress site, as well with a mindful social media campaign to engage the local clientèle.

The event was hosted at the River Rock Casino & Resort just outside of the Vancouver area. This is quite the place and the staff was great at the casino despite not having any time to waste some company money at the poker tables. The conference was thoroughly and thoughtfully planned by Jennifer @ The Finer Details, and had everything running smoothly. If you’re running a conference in the Vancouver area, she’s the go to person to keep everything organized so they deserve some link props!

The highlight of the night was when Excel Tire graciously took us out to a dinner theatre called The Giggle Dam. They do a themed event which includes a lovely dinner, but even better, one hilarious show. I’ve been to a lot of events in Vancouver before, but this one took the cake! If you’re not one to enjoy being made fun of, or put on stage and embarrassed then this place isn’t for you. I however will be going back the next time I visit Vancouver!

For anyone else in the same boat, wanting to bring their company into 2011 with a bang then don’t hesitate to give us a shout. We are able to do on-site training and presentations all over North America and Europe. We are located in both Vancouver and Victoria BC if you’re wanting easier access to our team.  We provide a mix of fun marketing ideas with the usual boring statistics and marketing data. We encourage drinking during our presentations, so keep that mind if you’re thinking about hiring us to speak with your brand.

Holy Crap Cereal Pwns The Dragons Den

One of my favorite shows in the past few years is the CBC’s Dragons Den, something that a lot of Americans may not have heard of. There was a spin off called The Shark Tank which most of should know about. Either way, it’s a show where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to the Dragons for a cut of their action. This past week a local company to us here in BC pitched their healthy cereal called Holy Crap, and needless to say they got an offer so fast it made history on the show. So speaking in terms of branding, this is one helluva opportunity that has set the Internet on fire in terms of blog posts, news and Twitter traffic all talking about the brand. They were also very smart to name the cereal the way they did and you can bet this cereal will be all over supermarkets by the end of the year. I was so impressed with how it all went down that I actually ordered some cereal, that is saying something because I rarely purchase online, let alone food! That and I’m not even a breakfast person.

The Sun Does Old Spice Commercial Parody..For Men

I won’t go much into this other than the example of more great branding, this time The Sun’s Page 3 is leveraging a little spice to grab the attention of the world. I’m sure you all saw Sesame Street’s adaption using Grover, which was brilliant, and now The Sun has done what I was hoping someone would do…one for the guys. This video netted over a million views since I looked at it yesterday, and you can bet they’ll topple a few million by the end of this week, especially with the girl they used…hot damn! They should have added a link to their site within the video’s description, so hopefully someone from the web team reads this and gets on it. For the meantime, I’d keep an eye on their Alexa Traffic Stats, the Twitter chatter and if you want to see how many links it netted them, well you know what to do!

Antoine Dodson’s Sex Offender App Commercial

While I’m all over the map when it comes to branding your business, I’m trying to keep up with all the tactics going on these days. Youtube “sensation” Antoine Dodson has somehow become famous, and I’m sure you’ve seen his face at one point in time within the past month. While this guy somehow is still popular is beyond me…I even saw him on TMZ the other day although I don’t like to publicly admit I watch the show from time to time. The company behind The Sex Offender Tracker App pulled a good move by hiring Antoine because it will entertain the fans, and it will annoy the hell out of everyone else! Any press is good press, so when Forbes.com started bitching away they helped sealed the success of this app for now, as well as a little help from me of course. This is another great example of branding that brings in all sorts of citations from Twitter mentions, thousands of links from blogs and of course links from the biggest and most authoritative news sites on the web….bravo! If you’re company is still just trying to build anchor text link after anchor text link then wake up and realize more needs to be done.

Atomic Tom Performs With iPhones On The NYC Subway

The phone wars are taking it to the streets these days and while this isn’t the first impromptu subway concert, nor will it be the last, its still an amazing marketing ploy. I’m a huge fan of this style of advertising mainly because there is a lot of focus on the art, but still trying to sell you something in the end. We will no doubt see a lot more of this across other cities in North America, but NYC is obviously the best place to try this out. Atomic Tom apparently had their gear stolen so rocked out on their iPhones instead. Both parties involved in this should stand to make a good ROI on this video just from Youtube alone. The hype has also stirred up a lot of Twitter chatter, and tons of links from blogs within the entertainment and tech industries. Moral of the story? Do something different!

Let Your Customers Do Your Marketing

October 26  |  Brand Building  |   Ryan Clark

In a world of unstoppable social media you have to sometimes sit back and let your brand take off. For large corporations, this can be an easy task due to the amount of fans out there armed with a video camera and some wifi. In this case, McDonald’s got some free advertising from the The LOL Boys in form of a little rap track parody of Rick Ross’s “Hustlin“. While the song is slightly NSFW due to language, this shouldn’t matter anymore….at all! This is something the corporation would most likely never do( in North America anyway) in this current day an age, so sit back and enjoy the free PR. I know McDonald’s is heavily geared towards children, but what’s worse…a little swearing and a large black man naked in a tub of cheeseburgers, or the actual content the food is made of? By the end of the week this video might see a million views, so listen up McDonald’s and send these boys some Bic Mac coupons!

Foursquare Space Station Check In = Linkbait!

The first Foursquare check-in from space was completed by astronaut Douglas Wheelock just the other day. In a world of PR and viral marketing it has become quite a bit harder to get heard, so when you can blast a message from space you know the world will tune in. While Foursquare battles the location based check-in war, it seems they just got a massive PR spike thanks to this interesting event. Gizmodo broke the news for most and it has struck up enough interest to really make me step back and analyze this whole event from a marketing perspective.

I really think this will help out Foursquare more than anything, but NASA surely doesn’t mind the extra buzz since they’ve been trying to capture the attention of the nation. I imagine it will be a while before we see another check in from space, but I am quite excited for the first Moon check-in, and then eventually other planets like Mars!

Tequila Avion Brand Update

October 21  |  Brand Building  |   Ryan Clark

I just thought I’d check up and see what has been going on with Tequila Avion since I last blogged about the sheer marketing genius going on. The Tequila has been mentioned on just about every celebrity blog, across multiple Tequila only websites as well as a plethora of high quality blogs. Their social media presence hit the ground running, and they’re still in the lead. I mentioned in my last post that it would take a while to crack the top 10 for the keyword Tequila, but it seems that things are looking brilliant for the company.

This marketing strategy has propelled them to spot #39 for the keyword Tequila ( according to Scroogle ), but I imagine you might see different results depending on where you live. I mentioned in my previous post that I didn’t expect them to get there that quick, and with more and more people talking about it, they should see some more movement. Keep in mind they’ve been doing a great job when they launch in a new city which alone nets them Liquor store links, as well a ton of local Twitter mentions. You can see there latest launch in Texas got some attention from the greatest Tequila blogs, and with flying sky banners you can’t go wrong.

I didn’t plan on an update this early so it will be really interesting to see how things continue on now until the end of the next season. I have no idea how hard they’re going to push Avion again, but I imagine it will be dominant throughout the season. I’d love to hear what you guys think about their marketing tactics, and what outcome you think might unfold.
