linkwheel

I’m sure by now most of you have either seen, heard or put in to action a “link wheel” of sorts into your SEO gameplan. Now some of you might be starting to worry about me and wonder why I’m bringing up this topic. Afterall, it is usually kept in black/greyhat arena’s but I don’t think it needs to be. As usual I’m hoping to get a ton of good feedback from you folks in the comments to dig into the topic, but I’ll try my best to bring up the pro’s and con’s.

The term link wheel has only been used for a year or two now but in reality any good blackhat affiliate marketer has been doing something similar since links have been king. Linkwheeling is just the nice term used to sell to the endless amounts of clueless noobs on Digital Point and any similar forum. There’s nothing too secret about the method and it can be extremely successful if implemented correctly. 99% of the webmasters I see on forums asking questions about it just think that paying $250 for a link wheel service will boost them into the top 10, or do something magical.

Before I get some nasty comments about that last comment, I will state that I’ve seen top 10 results from a simple link wheel, just not for any difficult search term. And no, I won’t out anyone’s link wheel on here and please don’t in the comments. If you’re constantly snooping your competitions link profile like I do, you’ll easily be able to spot one in action.

What Is A Link Wheel?

For those of you who have been hiding under a rock or just don’t frequent the tubes as much as most of us do then let me explain a little bit beyond the diagram. The idea here is to create mini sites across a whole host of free social media and blogging platforms. Specifically you want to minimize the linking amongst each other, obviously for the one way links, and in the end push all the link juice to the money making website.

We all know that one way links are the key here but 3/4’s of the people implementing the technique are so god damn lazy it isn’t working 100%. I say this because from what I mostly see myself are people paying for the service and then letting it just sit there. They might occasionally update the link wheel with new content, but for the most part this doesn’t happen. Despite all the the content put on the link wheel sites are usually spun or just straight up copied. We all know how Google’s “dupe content” filter is near worthless.

Con’s Of A Link Wheel:

I figure I’d start with the bad stuff because it is the most important afterall. A link wheel system is a link scheme and we all know what Google thinks about that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a link builder my profession so I don’t think I’m all high and mighty with my techniques. Although I do not waste my client’s time with endless directory/social bookmarking/blog commenting “packages”, I’m still building links to influence their ranking.

Like I mentioned earlier that for the most part people are lazy or don’t have the time to build a network like this up. Paying someone from a forum is usually the route I see taken and this is where it all goes wrong(with the exception of a handful of skilled people who do high quality content and link building – an example being Red_Virus). A lot of link wheelers don’t care about your site, and if you’re a company they won’t really care about your brand.

The big issue is you want links in content from sites that are related to your topic and have some weight. So while the free blog hosts may have some authority, your fresh subdomain blog does not. And 3 measly spun articles that are bookmarked isn’t going to do much for you. You’ll get indexed but your link wheel is going to passing link juice that’s not from concentrate :) If you’re trying to target difficult keywords you’re going to have to spend a lot of time making those wheel sites to have some authority.

So if the content quality is bad how long will those wheel sites stay indexed? Well that could really go either way but my money is on they’ll be filtered out eventually, thus ruining little juice you had coming to you. Another aspect you have to think about is how diverse is this going to make your link profile look? If you’re a big brand or somewhat established company, and not an affiliate flog, you’re going to want to be cautious in your link building efforts.

Google can potentially pick up on what’s going on here and with the amount it’s being done poorly I’d suspect it could be problematic in the future. But all in all, after all my yapping, the moral of the story is to keep the quality high.

Pro’s Of A Link Wheel:

Since the opportunity presents itself to build super high quality content and get links it could potentially be a killer method. I use similar techniques for clients from time to time, especially if there is a lack of quality places to put content. If they’ve got the time and money to invest in a long term strategy then makin a link wheel that’s;

a) based on high quality content that isn’t spun or copied from any other web source

b) updated frequently with good content to keep the indexing and eventually bring some authority to those hub sites

From what I’ve seen by developing content for certain social media sites is that you open yourself up to more exposure, and hopefully clients. Some of the sites used by link wheel’s your content actually gets viewed, and if it’s good it could get passed around. I’ll even do “micro linkbait” articles to make sure the reader is enjoying his or herself.

I know this sounds like a lot of work, and it is so be prepared to get someone writing full time or make sure you have the funds to “get’er done”. From what I’ve seen it takes a couple months to get a 7-10 site link wheel going where it has enough content and authority to start pushing some weight.

So enough with my blabbing on and on….lets hear what you folks have to say about all this, and if anything at least get the flaming out of the way :)

Sorry that this is 2 months old already but I somehow missed it and it deserves to be watched for those who missed it as well. Rand talks about how to get re-tweeted and while we all know what that is, I think some of us need to give it some serious thought. Not only does it generate traffic and buzz but it increases your chances of getting a link.

SEOmoz’s conference just ended and I really didn’t read too much on it but Tom Critchlow was speaking about hotel link building and I caught this video. It’s short but has a few *killer* tips for link building in there, so hotel marketer’s better listen up. The video is shot by O’Rourke Hospitality Marketing and I thank you for getting this out. I would have loved to see Tom speak at the conference but I tend to not get out much.

Do Wholesale Or Drop Shipping? Tons Of Link Building Opportunities

September 8  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

I’ve mentioned that I’ve been working on a lot of link building and social media marketing for Ecommerce sites, both clients websites and my own. We all do wholesale and I’m thinking about drop shipping my product because it’s quite unique and I don’t see anyone else doing so. Both options are great for a legit business and this is why I really like these link building methods.

Spammers with affiliate sites and MFA sites won’t be able to take this information and put it to mass use, so hurray there. If you’re a legit online/offline business who handles wholesale orders, or/and drop ships then you’re in for a handful of links and business opportunities. I’ve talked before about link building with your podcast, or if you have a mobile version of your website and what that can do for you. It gives your website the chance to diversify its link portfolio, it shows Google that you’re building a brand and makes your site look(become) more established.

So you say I can build links Mr. Linkbuildr? Absolutely! I won’t go overboard listing resources here, but I’ll go in depth enough so that you can figure out the rest for yourself. I’d recommend taking this to your boss if you’re a slave to the man and see what they think before acting on their behalf. So first things first, let’s start with forums you can market your product on as well get some links. These are forums you’re not going to want to hit and run, but rather sign up and take part because I’ve grown my wholesale business thanks to them.

Remember to follow proper link building practices such as minimal forum signature’s, filling out your link in the forum user profile(these get indexed sometimes) and post only in the appropriate sections. These forums all have a place to advertise your drop shipping or wholesale service, so be kind and don’t spam(or I’m telling your moms!).

Wholesale & Drop Shipping Forums:

TheWholesaleForums.co.uk – This is my stomping ground and I love the community here. Everyone is friendy, you can get good advice on marketing as well see what other people are doing. The forums are dofollow, so your wholesale threads and signatures. Don’t go there just for the links because nobody likes link spammers. I use this place to advertise what I’m selling wholesale and I’ve had other bloggers pick up the thread and write about my wholesale page, including nice and juicy links!

Wholesaleforum.net – Well this forum isn’t going on my recommendation list, but instead over to my watch for list. The forum seems like it was started just because the owner picked up the domain when it dropped. There are a lot of spammy posts on there and I wouldn’t want a link from it. Best to keep an eye on it though.

Dropshipforums.com – This is another forum that I wouldn’t recommend getting a link from, but use only for getting the word out. The forum has 1300+ members and a ton of spammy posts, but it isn’t without its advantages. You can advertise your drop shipping service for free which gets you a non SEO friendly link in the Dropship Magazine.

BW.net – This is one of the more active forums with a ton of great information regardin the business. They also have a host of other site features like classifieds and a business directory. The forum is dofollow, is decently indexed in Google and I wouldn’t discourage getting the link from your signature here.

eShopforums.com – I love this forum and you can find me on here from time to time. I started out in the Ecommerce world here. For a forum with only 1200+ members it is quite active and has a lot of great information. Signature and forum links are nofollow, but again the forums are a place to get new business mainly.

Salehoo.com/forum/ – Everyone in this business should have heard about Salehoo at one point or another. Their forum is full of smart wholesalers, it’s packed with great information and you can get links for your efforts. You can also promote your services here, and if you can establish trust with this community, you’re going to be a happy person.

Dropshipforum.co.uk – This is the most active forum I’ve found, and even though it’s focused around drop shipping, there is a wholesaler section. I’ve been on here for a few months helping people out with Ecommerce SEO and everyone is really friendly. Links are nofollow on this site as well, but you know me, I don’t mind that!

OnlineWholesaleForums.com – The forum is only good for the dofollow links and marketing your wholesale opportunities. The discussions that take place outside of the business areas are that of Digital Point Forums….full of the most annoying noobs.

Wholesale Directories:

I’m not usually a big fan of web directories except for the big 3 BOTW/Yahoo/Business.com, but wholesale directories should provide more substance. The fact that these are so niche makes me feel better because I know not every $5 1000 directory submission “SEO expert” will be raping them. Don’t take my word for it though. take this opportunity to measure for yourself if the wholesale directory is worth being listed in. If the site doesn’t pass a good quality score with the Link Voodoo tool then perhaps you shouldn’t bother.

I will be listing free and paid directories here because I’m trying to list the most authoritative ones. There are a lot more wholesale directories out there so use Google to find them.

Wholesale Distributors Net – This is the biggest and most known next to Alibaba and has millions of pageviews per year. They have both a free inclusion and a paid one which gets you in faster which is better in my books. The price to get listed express is only $48 USD a year and you get a anchor friendly dofollow link.

Wholesale Hub – This place does a lot of traffic, has dofollow links and you can write some pretty extensive company information. The prices are not too cheap, but affordable if you’re in the wholesel business. To view the pricing click here.

Alibaba.com – Yahoo bought this some time ago and it’s still the biggest b2b marketplace that I know of. It is also the worst designed b2b and you can spend hours on the site before you figure out what’s going on. You can sign up for free and get your own subdomain to sell your wholesale products on which is great, but I haven’t seen anywhere you can get a link. With the free account you can list up to 50 products, so for my this was all I needed. Your personalized website should have no problem ranking top 10 for the longtail wholesale keyword you’re after.

Top Wholesale Suppliers – Another standard wholesale directory that costs money for a review, but it supploes a dofollow link. A lifetime text link will run you only $40 USD, and for featured listings they can run upwards of $50-100 a month.

Other Link Building & Business Opportunities:

So all of the above is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to places you can build links and attract wholesale and dropshipping deals. You can apply the usual link building methods of course if you’re solely a wholesale business. Just to get some more brain juices flowing here are some other ideas you could use to market;

– Advertise on an industry podcast

– Linkedin has a few wholesaler/dropshipping groups

– Get a target domain ie wholesaleshoes.com/net/org or wholesaleWhateverImselling.com. This has worked great for me and I was able to snipe into the top 10 within a week. Since then I’ve been doing thousands in wholesale business a month.

If anyone has any other tips I’d love to hear them and you know what to do, drop them in my comments. I’d like to remind everyone that I am available to help with your companies link building, especially for Ecommerce websites. I’ve got a link building and social media marketing strategy that’s been developed over the last year via clients and my own sites.

Anchor Text Penalty While Link Building

August 20  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

Chris (cemper) is one of the most respected link builders out there and it is due time that I started getting his videos up here for everyone to see. This video brings out something very interesting you don’t hear about in the open too often. I know I’ve run into this problem many times and it is just one of the pitfalls of link building.

Chris has a German real estate client who has been online for 10 years and has naturally developed around 100,000 links(give or take site wides :). The problem started when they built some links to a few new content pages, and then got filtered via Google’s anchor text sniffer. Take a listen and learn a thing or two that might save you some time and trouble down the road.

Don’t Forget Aboutus.org

May 30  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

Almost every SEO Consultant is aware of Aboutus.org, but from what I’ve seen a lot of webmasters, bloggers and SEO’s do not take full advantage of what they offer. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s basically an about your website page that is powered by a Wiki and some custom technology. It’s arguably the most popular site like it, and it gets the most love in Google’s eyes.

Aboutus catalogs over 10 million websites, has 26 million pages indexed and does a grade A job of internal linking. If you want to see how a site sculps their page rank by the books then hunt around Aboutus with your favorite SEO browser plugin. I haven’t done too much editing to the Linkbuildr Aboutus Page, but as you can see I’ve done some editing which is more than I can say about others.

If you’re working on a client, or wanting a SEO boost then I highly recommend paying for an Aboutus Sponsor Review. For $197 USD you get can have their staff write a review of your webiste/business which will get you a content rich profile page. This can include video, audio and as well you get the benefit of dofollow links. The free pages limit you to nofollow and less social media features, but it is still worth the time to fill out. I’ll be working more heavily on mine over the weekend and I suggest everyone do so as well!

**Update

Kristina from Aboutus was too kind in coming here and giving me some more information. If you want to make a great page you can have the option of getting a couple dofollow links. check out the ProFollow tips and you could be on your way to more SEO benefits.
