I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with a full time link builder and cartoonist extroidanaire. He goes online by the name of SEOKevin and can be seen here in the comments. He is responsible for my now favorite comic strip of all time(sorry Calvin & Hobbes), Kevin & the Googlebots. The comic is based around many hilarious scenarious mixed with real life mixed in with a whole lot of well thought out SEO humor. I know if I showed this to my normal friends they would most likely not enjoy this as much as you folks. IF anyone from one of the bigger SEO sites such as Search Engine Journal see’s this comic then I’d urge you to get it on as a weekly feature…this is one form of comedy not to be missed. Here’s a taste of Kevin’s work and if you like what you see, get in contact and let him know you enjoyed it so he keeps putting them out!

Link Building Links To Keep You Going For Today
I’ve been quite busy in the last couple of days sorting out my move and hacking up my theme behind the scenes. I’ve got another post coming which I might get out later tonight…depending on how my girlfriend feels about that. I’ve managed to set a video interview with one of my favorite startups which happens to be local and growing like wildfire. Info Barrel is a new revenue sharing content site that is based out of Vancouver and they’re going to let me harass them for a day on video. I’ll be putting together the episode as my first Link Building Podast although I didn’t plan it to be video based, so I think most of them will still be audio.
I need to get the Link Building Forums promoted better, which is part of the reason I’m hacking up the theme. Another big part of the theme hacking is to help monetize the site in a way that doesn’t clutter the readers eyes with ads. I want to get all my link building services offered and presented in a way that is pleasing to the eye, and in a spot that still will help pay the bills. I’ve stopped a lot of my affiliate marketing efforts for now to give this site a huge focus.
Angela Moore is now bored that the Olympics are over but it has sparked her creative brain to come up with the Link Development Decathlon. The idea is a competative link building competition where we’d compete for rankings scored around a tight ratings system.
1) Research Steeple Chase – Every link builder worth their paycheck knows that finding good links requires a ton of research. This event involves jumping hurdles of low quality sites and slogging through the mess to find the coveted high-quality, relevant sites. Points are given for each site found in one hour; deductions are made for sites that have low quality factors such as hidden text, link farms, and irrelevant content.
Jazial Crossley has written a cool, short and to the point article entitled The Lowdown On Deep Linking. What I really liked about this article was the fact that a case study was brought into backing up the facts, and not just rehashed information we all know already. I will be the first to admit I need to work on my deep linking game.
If anyone wants to write a guest post while I’m down and out for the next couple of days get in touch with me, and I’ll be glad to review what you’d like to write on. And one last thing before I bust out to get back to PHP code and Photoshop, the owner of Digital Point is in some hot water over cookie stuffing although it could be a wicked link bait experiment.
It’s Going To Be A Slow Few Days
Coming up I’m preparing to move deeper downtown Vancouver where I’m currently in an apartment on the beach. I’ve got to move in January and my good friend asked me to look after his cat and apartment for free until then, so I said what the hell. So the next few days are going to be slow on the link building news front because I have to finish a few things up for a client. So on that note if anyone needs some consulting work to formulate a link building strategy that’s 100% custom to your businesses niche, give me a shout.
I’m also still wanting to draw you guys into the Link Building Forums so we can get that going, but I’m aware it’s going to be another 6 months before that place is all hustle and bustle. I’m in talks now with a new moderator who can bring a lot to the forum due to his career in the SEO game, so more on that soon. I’ve managed to get within the top 10 on the first couple of days for the forum which should help a little bit but as I’ve stated before, I really think the link building niche is yet to take off as much as it will.
Link Building With Your Resume
I’ve been trying to find another way to build links that will come off as reputable links and it led me to resume websites. There have been quite a few web 2.0 resume creating/posting sites coming out as well, if you dig deep, there are a ton of old and authoritative resume sites. The beauty about link building this way is that you can also sharpen your resume writing skills, and even perhaps snag a few jobs within your industry. Some of the web 2.0 based resume sites have built in wizards to create your online wizard in a snap, which usually includes a place for a backlink.
I won’t name too many sites and leave the resume site snooping up to you guys, but we’ll take a look at one site which makes a perfect example. Emurse is an online resume site that does everything from create and store your professional resume online with all the print options so employers can get your resume easily. They also keeps track of your past and present colleagues using the Emurse contact manager. Invite your contacts to Emurse and always have access to their latest contact information and resume.
In this day and age of technology, blogs, podcasts and social networking employers want to see your online portfolio, so what a better way to drop some links. You can start by creating an account and get to creating your resume. You can see for yourself that you can get do follow backlinks within your resume by checking out the latest resumes. One of the new ones listed was Jason Yandell’s resume which you can see his links in action within his resume.
I hope this gives you guys the inspiration to go and find out other resume sites that are great for link building, and if you do come on over to the link building forums and make a post! I’m going to be doing some link building with my resume this week in order to gain some more authoraty for this site. It’s still so new and I could use all the help I can get.
Social Bookmarking Microsoft Style – PeeeeYewwww
I just read about the MSDN center setting up a social bookmarking service to the public for link building and information sharing. Well I quickly jumped onto the link to see what they had in the works and I nearly snorted hot latte through my nose as the screen loaded. Now I can easily mock Microsoft when it comes to design, no contest there, but this site takes the cake for boring.
Microsoft is opening up the MSDN, TechNet, and Expression sites to the community, so that technical professionals can better connect with each other, share knowledge, and succeed. Tagging – and especially social bookmarking – are essential ingredients for making this happen. Back in May, just before TechEd North America, we released a preview version of our new social bookmarking app for MSDN, for TechNet, and for Expression. Since then, thousands of technical professionals from around the world have begun using it to save their web favorites online, share them with others, see what other technical pros are favoriting, and connect with others
I quickly saw the links are do follow and SEO friendly so immediately had that to blog about, but I also noticed a lot of people have beat me to the punch. I don’t think I’m really going to use this service at all because anything I had to say would most likely be classified as spam :) Check it out and let me know what you think.
The Link Building Forums Go Live
Hey everyone! I’ve spent tha last few hours of the day testing out the forum and finding out there’s a lot of work to be done. I invite everyone to sign up to the beta release of these forums because we’re running on a different open source forum CMS than most. I decided to go with UseBB because like my sites they’re both somewhat new and growing, and I kind of wanted to hack around with some new CMS besides phpBB or vBulletin.
UseBB is put together by a small team of coders who are very passionate about the code, and are currently working on a very much needed version 2. I liked the ease of the setup as well the look and feel of the whole forum. The template draws from the other forums in feel and style making it a easy on the eyes, and lets the reader focus on the content. Currently I’m running version 1.0.9 which is lacking in a few key features suck as private messaging, user groups and attachments. Version 2 is hopefully on its way very soon because I know how important private messaging is.
I’m going to do my best to rank the forum very quickly for the term ‘link building forum(s)’ as well promote from this blog. On that note, I’d like to call on my fellow bloggers to write a post about the forum if they want to help out..no pressure. I know starting a forum can be very tough so I’ll be honest and say I’d have no problems taking in feedback, critisicm and advice.
The forum is also going to need moderators and this is something I’d like to implement catiously over time. I’d like respected bloggers/podcasters/writers who are in the industry to join as moderators to help build a solid community. To help pay back my moderators I will be sharing advertising slots within the site to share the wealth for the time and effort put in. Please contact me if you’re interested in becoming a moderator.
Forum Sections And Why I Chose Them:
The first section of the forums is the Link Building Chat. This is the usual area for chatting about everything and anything link building. I don’t want to clutter the forum with so many sections mainly because I believe a cleaner forum will grow faster. There are so many different sites to link build with so I imagine this section will be the most active part of the link building forums.
0day Link Building Techniques:
Second is an experimental section of the forum for 0day Link Building Techniques which will share secret techniques that only a few eyes will see. To get into this forum you have to submit to me your technique to be approved into this section. I know this sounds kind of sktechy but I cannot see any other way and I will uphold your intel with the utmost privacy. Since others within this section has shared some of their secrets, it should make it worth exposing yours to gain access to all the other information.
The third section on the forum is for Social Bookmarking and I’d like people to talk about promotion and link building with various social bookmarking sites. This is also a good place to announce your niche bookmarking site, or a new one you’ve discovered. I love social bookmarking because you can get both do follow links and targeted traffic.
Fourth up is a concept I’ve wanted to see on other popular forums but haven’t come across, and that is a place to exchange Blog Posts. I want to be able to exchange blog posts either one-way or do some various 3-way methods to get more content rich backlinks. If you’re also looking for a guest poster this is the place to ask or request.
The fifth section covers everything do follow for both blogs and forums. It seems this is quite the popular link building method at the moment that’s very mainstream. There are plenty of other ways to get better do follow links, but blogs and forums are just so damned easy to find.
My sixth section on the forum was an obvious choice for this type of forum. I imagine 99% of the members will have some sort of website that will want link exchanges for. I want to promote this but keep the exchanges niche based so you can build a solid link neighborhood. Doing too many unrelated link exchanges will only weaken your sites strength in the search engines as well hurt others you’ve traded with. Keep them to a minimum and when you trade with someone, stick to that deal.
The seventh part is all about promoting your media weather that be a video, blog post or article somewhere on the web. The Related Links section is not a place to spam the with crappy information or the whole forum will start going to the dogs. Sponsors are welcome to post news about products as well, but if you have an affiliate program for that sponsor let me know. Running a forum also costs money so I’d like to cover the basics.
Last but not least is the section for Social Media Marketing. Using social media platforms and link building for that content is a very effective way of ranking for a hot keyword. I am a big fan of affiliate marketing with Youtube and Squidoo so you will see me being very active in this section.
So I hope I can build these forums up to be a fun place to hang out and learn as well conduct business within the community of link builders. I believe this niche is only beginning to blow up and I’d love to help it grow to become something respected.
Enough already….Visit the Link Building Forums.
Link Building With Triond.com
Triond is a very cool and unique revenue sharing social media site that lets you do so many things. Triond takes your original content and if approved, publishes it on other websites that they feel is the most related to your content. This will also get you a do follow link from their bookmarking system under your user profile passing all sorts of link juice around. So as you can see this is a very interesting concept and it seems to be doing well for people! The more you write and get published, the more links and even author reckognition you get as time goes by. So this is defintely a “good content only” mission that you’ll need to work hard for in order to make it worth your while….no one said building links would be easy!
Busby SEO Test or Busby SEO SPAM Test
I’ve been seeing more and more on the Busby SEO Test, and no I’m not trying to rank or win for it with this post. SEO contests in general are good for the industry, but I’m seeing how badly this one has gotten out of control with spam of all sorts. You can see the results of who’s on top at this moment in time, and just from analyzing the backlinks of the top people you can clearly see the comment spam tactics at play. This blog itself has got a lot of (pardon my french) shitty comments from contestants with the anchor text in place, and over at my buddy Joel Drapper’s blog I just notice one as well which got me digging more into the contest. So lets take a quick look into the top “performers” for the challenge, but keep in mind some of my data is from Google Canada, so depending on what data center you’re looking from it might be a little different.
I used two different tools to analyze the backlinks of the first two listed there, Yahoo Site Explorer and Backlink Watch. It took me no longer than a few minutes to sell all the blog comments these contestants have used, as well a bunch of other link spamming on sites such as DeviantArt. Now the way these contestants have used questionable tactics is not something you’d want to do for a client, or even for your own site. In the long run Google will catch onto this but for now there’s no doubt that anchor text is still the number one way to rank.
So go ahead and check out some of the contestants links from DeviantArt, blog comments and link exchanges. The comments left behind on blogs are the usualy one liners “thanks for the great information” which defeats the whole purpose of commenting on blogs, and is now a form of spam. This kind of link building gives us all a bad name.
So without getting too nasty or diving in any more into this silly contest what are your thoughts? Am I being rude and unfair? Have you been spammed by a contestant and want to vent? There is a positive and that is the example and real world results you can see from link building, good or bad.
