If I could show you the amount of positive SERP results I see from clients getting listed in Best Of The Web, I’d be fired. I always talk about the directory for a good reason, it’s old and it helps you gain the trust of Google. Having your business pass their review helps your website establish some credit and gives a boost to your overall SEO efforts.

Best Of The Web is having a huge 20% off during September sale and if you’ve been thinking about signing up, now’s the time. Just follow the link in the article, or click on the big awesome picture I hacked up GIMP. When you’re signing up and it asks for a discount code enter in SINCE94.

Do Wholesale Or Drop Shipping? Tons Of Link Building Opportunities

September 8  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

I’ve mentioned that I’ve been working on a lot of link building and social media marketing for Ecommerce sites, both clients websites and my own. We all do wholesale and I’m thinking about drop shipping my product because it’s quite unique and I don’t see anyone else doing so. Both options are great for a legit business and this is why I really like these link building methods.

Spammers with affiliate sites and MFA sites won’t be able to take this information and put it to mass use, so hurray there. If you’re a legit online/offline business who handles wholesale orders, or/and drop ships then you’re in for a handful of links and business opportunities. I’ve talked before about link building with your podcast, or if you have a mobile version of your website and what that can do for you. It gives your website the chance to diversify its link portfolio, it shows Google that you’re building a brand and makes your site look(become) more established.

So you say I can build links Mr. Linkbuildr? Absolutely! I won’t go overboard listing resources here, but I’ll go in depth enough so that you can figure out the rest for yourself. I’d recommend taking this to your boss if you’re a slave to the man and see what they think before acting on their behalf. So first things first, let’s start with forums you can market your product on as well get some links. These are forums you’re not going to want to hit and run, but rather sign up and take part because I’ve grown my wholesale business thanks to them.

Remember to follow proper link building practices such as minimal forum signature’s, filling out your link in the forum user profile(these get indexed sometimes) and post only in the appropriate sections. These forums all have a place to advertise your drop shipping or wholesale service, so be kind and don’t spam(or I’m telling your moms!).

Wholesale & Drop Shipping Forums:

TheWholesaleForums.co.uk – This is my stomping ground and I love the community here. Everyone is friendy, you can get good advice on marketing as well see what other people are doing. The forums are dofollow, so your wholesale threads and signatures. Don’t go there just for the links because nobody likes link spammers. I use this place to advertise what I’m selling wholesale and I’ve had other bloggers pick up the thread and write about my wholesale page, including nice and juicy links!

Wholesaleforum.net – Well this forum isn’t going on my recommendation list, but instead over to my watch for list. The forum seems like it was started just because the owner picked up the domain when it dropped. There are a lot of spammy posts on there and I wouldn’t want a link from it. Best to keep an eye on it though.

Dropshipforums.com – This is another forum that I wouldn’t recommend getting a link from, but use only for getting the word out. The forum has 1300+ members and a ton of spammy posts, but it isn’t without its advantages. You can advertise your drop shipping service for free which gets you a non SEO friendly link in the Dropship Magazine.

BW.net – This is one of the more active forums with a ton of great information regardin the business. They also have a host of other site features like classifieds and a business directory. The forum is dofollow, is decently indexed in Google and I wouldn’t discourage getting the link from your signature here.

eShopforums.com – I love this forum and you can find me on here from time to time. I started out in the Ecommerce world here. For a forum with only 1200+ members it is quite active and has a lot of great information. Signature and forum links are nofollow, but again the forums are a place to get new business mainly.

Salehoo.com/forum/ – Everyone in this business should have heard about Salehoo at one point or another. Their forum is full of smart wholesalers, it’s packed with great information and you can get links for your efforts. You can also promote your services here, and if you can establish trust with this community, you’re going to be a happy person.

Dropshipforum.co.uk – This is the most active forum I’ve found, and even though it’s focused around drop shipping, there is a wholesaler section. I’ve been on here for a few months helping people out with Ecommerce SEO and everyone is really friendly. Links are nofollow on this site as well, but you know me, I don’t mind that!

OnlineWholesaleForums.com – The forum is only good for the dofollow links and marketing your wholesale opportunities. The discussions that take place outside of the business areas are that of Digital Point Forums….full of the most annoying noobs.

Wholesale Directories:

I’m not usually a big fan of web directories except for the big 3 BOTW/Yahoo/Business.com, but wholesale directories should provide more substance. The fact that these are so niche makes me feel better because I know not every $5 1000 directory submission “SEO expert” will be raping them. Don’t take my word for it though. take this opportunity to measure for yourself if the wholesale directory is worth being listed in. If the site doesn’t pass a good quality score with the Link Voodoo tool then perhaps you shouldn’t bother.

I will be listing free and paid directories here because I’m trying to list the most authoritative ones. There are a lot more wholesale directories out there so use Google to find them.

Wholesale Distributors Net – This is the biggest and most known next to Alibaba and has millions of pageviews per year. They have both a free inclusion and a paid one which gets you in faster which is better in my books. The price to get listed express is only $48 USD a year and you get a anchor friendly dofollow link.

Wholesale Hub – This place does a lot of traffic, has dofollow links and you can write some pretty extensive company information. The prices are not too cheap, but affordable if you’re in the wholesel business. To view the pricing click here.

Alibaba.com – Yahoo bought this some time ago and it’s still the biggest b2b marketplace that I know of. It is also the worst designed b2b and you can spend hours on the site before you figure out what’s going on. You can sign up for free and get your own subdomain to sell your wholesale products on which is great, but I haven’t seen anywhere you can get a link. With the free account you can list up to 50 products, so for my this was all I needed. Your personalized website should have no problem ranking top 10 for the longtail wholesale keyword you’re after.

Top Wholesale Suppliers – Another standard wholesale directory that costs money for a review, but it supploes a dofollow link. A lifetime text link will run you only $40 USD, and for featured listings they can run upwards of $50-100 a month.

Other Link Building & Business Opportunities:

So all of the above is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to places you can build links and attract wholesale and dropshipping deals. You can apply the usual link building methods of course if you’re solely a wholesale business. Just to get some more brain juices flowing here are some other ideas you could use to market;

– Advertise on an industry podcast

– Linkedin has a few wholesaler/dropshipping groups

– Get a target domain ie wholesaleshoes.com/net/org or wholesaleWhateverImselling.com. This has worked great for me and I was able to snipe into the top 10 within a week. Since then I’ve been doing thousands in wholesale business a month.

If anyone has any other tips I’d love to hear them and you know what to do, drop them in my comments. I’d like to remind everyone that I am available to help with your companies link building, especially for Ecommerce websites. I’ve got a link building and social media marketing strategy that’s been developed over the last year via clients and my own sites.

Would You Pay For Link Building Resources?

August 28  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

Just thought I’d drop this out there because I’m thinking certain things over. I know I sometimes get flack for releasing certain link building tips and sometimes I just can’t help myself. The blog has been lacking in actual tips lately and although I have 206 drafts with goodies waiting(please don’t hack me :), I won’t be releasing 3/4 of it to the public.

I have a huge Ecommerce SEO/Link Building/SMM post/book that’s awaiting release and I’m wondering if I should charge a fee to view the post or not.

So….would you pay for the goods or should I release it all for everyone to “exploit”?

Anchor Text Penalty While Link Building

August 20  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

Chris (cemper) is one of the most respected link builders out there and it is due time that I started getting his videos up here for everyone to see. This video brings out something very interesting you don’t hear about in the open too often. I know I’ve run into this problem many times and it is just one of the pitfalls of link building.

Chris has a German real estate client who has been online for 10 years and has naturally developed around 100,000 links(give or take site wides :). The problem started when they built some links to a few new content pages, and then got filtered via Google’s anchor text sniffer. Take a listen and learn a thing or two that might save you some time and trouble down the road.

Vertical Measures “Boost Your Juice” Contest

June 3  |  News  |   Ryan Clark

I got an email from Arnie over at Vertical Measures about a pretty awesome contest they have going on. While Arnie was speaking at SMX this week I thought I’d help spread the word about the serious prizes and what you need to do. Let me tell you that the prizes are so good I was thinking of getting some fake ID and signing up. I could be Linky McBuildr or Mclinklovin :)

So they’ve called out all your business owners out there to create a small writeup of 200 words or less, or a 3 minute video stating why your business deserves 1st prize. If you win that you’re looking at $5000 worth of link building done by the team over at Vertical Measures. Second place is still looking to get $1000 worth of link building, and this could take your business to the next level.

The contest stops taking submissions on June 15th 2009, so you better get your ass in gear and submit your application. They have a great judge panel that you’ll need to win over and you can see the entire list on the contest page.

May 30  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

Almost every SEO Consultant is aware of Aboutus.org, but from what I’ve seen a lot of webmasters, bloggers and SEO’s do not take full advantage of what they offer. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s basically an about your website page that is powered by a Wiki and some custom technology. It’s arguably the most popular site like it, and it gets the most love in Google’s eyes.

Aboutus catalogs over 10 million websites, has 26 million pages indexed and does a grade A job of internal linking. If you want to see how a site sculps their page rank by the books then hunt around Aboutus with your favorite SEO browser plugin. I haven’t done too much editing to the Linkbuildr Aboutus Page, but as you can see I’ve done some editing which is more than I can say about others.

If you’re working on a client, or wanting a SEO boost then I highly recommend paying for an Aboutus Sponsor Review. For $197 USD you get can have their staff write a review of your webiste/business which will get you a content rich profile page. This can include video, audio and as well you get the benefit of dofollow links. The free pages limit you to nofollow and less social media features, but it is still worth the time to fill out. I’ll be working more heavily on mine over the weekend and I suggest everyone do so as well!

**Update

Kristina from Aboutus was too kind in coming here and giving me some more information. If you want to make a great page you can have the option of getting a couple dofollow links. check out the ProFollow tips and you could be on your way to more SEO benefits.

Targeted Linkbait Ideas To Ponder

May 28  |  Link Building  |   Ryan Clark

Linkbait is still all the rage and has always been around, just not necessarily under its branded term. There have been dozens of mind blowing linkbait articles from all the top link builders and I’ve found them to be some of the best reads this year. I’ll make sure to list the ones that have helped me out greatly at the end of this article.

I wanted to get on board and give back to the community with a few ideas I’ve put into action. These ideas hopefully make sense and I would really appreciate your feedback because it helps me learn as well. I’ve taken a few different steps to writing and marketing my linkbait for clients and myself, getting the links sometimes isn’t always easy. We’ll take a look at a few very targeted methods that will attract links from specific websites such as .edu and .gov, as well from sites within your niche.

I’ve stayed far away from taking a stab at a competitor or big fish even though the controversy can result in a lot of links. I believe that it could end up damaging your reputation, and that’s not something I’d risk for a client. I’ve had a lot of success with the humor side of linkbaiting and it can be a lot of fun to do. I’ve lately been really trying to target the types of websites I’d be getting links from with or without contacting them, and it can be tricky! Let’s take a look at what I’m talking about.

Targeting .edu/.gov Sites With Linkbait:

I won’t get into debating whether or not a .edu/.gov link holds more value that any other site. I personally don’t think it does in general, it just happens to be that a lot of the .edu/.gov sites have just naturally built up trust over time. 99% of the methods used to get links from these sites is down right not ethical, but don’t worry I’m not judging :) However, specially crafted linkbait can attract links from these sites.

The task of attracting links from .edu/.gov sites will not be an easy one, and be prepared to make several attempts at it before having it work. You could also be setting yourself up for as massive fail, but it’ll be worth it if your content is good. With that being said, you’ll also have to have the right type of site and content to make it seem like they should be linking to you.

In my experience I’ve tried to go about it two different ways and have managed to rack up some success. I really think these ideas could be pushed further and really do someone serious link loving from some very juicy sites.

Target An Individual .Edu: If your business or website content revolves around a certain location you might want to target your local university. This could be done in a variety of ways, and I’ll drop some ideas below. Getting webmasters and students to find your content let alone link to it is hard to do, but you won’t know until you try. Here are some ideas you could tackle to get links from a single .edu or .gov.

-10 places to study in peace at $insertuniversityhere

-20 money savings tips around/on campus at $insertuniversityhere

-10 famous people to graduate from $insertuniversityhere

So these topics may or may not be the best, but they should hopefully inspire you to come up with your own ideas. Now attracting the links is the tough part so you’ll want to sit down and put some effort into it. Start by finding email addresses of the webmasters of that .edu and fire them off a nice and personal email. Another option is to look for forums or blogs run by the students and get involved, finding out their email addresses or by finding contact forms. If your content is good enough your chances of attracting one link is of course greatly improved. If you’re even more lucky, that one link will go a little viral and spread around campus blogs and resource pages.

These same techniques can be applied to target the education industry and government websites. If you take a good look at a few .gov sites you’ll notice a huge ton of them have resource pages. These should give you an idea of what type of content/sites they’re linking to, and ideas on how to create something worthy of a link. You’ll have to rely on savvy social engineering via email or phone to ask if your content could be considered as a resource. I’ve done this a lot and I usually see a 10-15% success rate in getting an actual link.

Targeting Authority Sites Within Your Niche:

This is another method that will either work great or not so great depending on the niche you’re in. For this method I’ll need you to make a list of 10-30 of the most authoritative sites within your niche, or even closely related sites. Next I’ll need you to think of some killer content ideas, I generally go with creating a *huge* resource list.

Let’s say you’re doing a resource list. To start I recommend just making a skeleton or point form note list of what this resource list will include. I also want you to take down notes about each of those other sites and note their strong points. Before getting deep into writing mode it is now time to email those webmasters and let them know about the resource list you’re putting together. Let them know you want to include something they’ve got into the list, even flatter them a bit and say how much it has helped you out.

This can be a slower process, and I’d give it a week or two to wait and see who contacts you back. Engage everyone who does email you back and try and get them interested in providing a link once it’s complete. You could even ask them to contribute something new which would give them a feeling of community. I strongly believe this greatly improves your chance of getting a link from that webmaster. Once you’ve finished all your contacting you’ll need to sit down and write out the wicked content and get it ready for distribution. Once it’s live you can now let those other site owners know and be on your way to snagging some quick links, and over time newer sites might link to your resource.

Do Your Own Videos? Make your Own Embed Code:

An amazing video is a great way to attract traffic and links, but most people lose out on the link part. This is a form of linkbait that isn’t easy to do either, but if you have the video skills then listen up. I’ve seen tons of small business commercials on Youtube kill it because they produced a really ingenious or funny viral video. Now they surely got exposure, but over time everyone who’s going to see the video has and the traffic starts to trickle in. Why not get a ton of links naturally as well?

Now what if you were to create your own embed code and host the video yourself? This could be a costly option, but if you’re only doing a few videos a year you should be good. You’re not always going to have a video go viral as well so you have to factor that in as well. The bandwidth cost could easily be worth the business you drum up thanks to the links you’ve gained naturally by having your hosted videos own embed code. I talked about how Vimeo switched up their embedded videos to have dofollow links incorporated which you can read here: Vimeo’s Link Building Strategy.

Creating A *Killer* CMS Theme:

Ok now I know what you’re thinking….not another sponsor a WordPress theme blurb. Well it is not quite that bad and I’ve only ever tried this for myself once with positive results. This is another aspect of the article I really want your feedback on so pipe up.

There are a few very popular CMS’s out there like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Elgg etc etc. They all have theme sites where you can submit themes to, and let’s face it, most of the themes are re-hacked and submitted with links to crappy sites. Google has been known to devalue these types of links pretty quickly

So what am I talking about? Well I’m talking about having a programmer design a theme that is absolutely amazing. This is clearly going to cost you but for me was well worth it in the end. If you take WordPress for example, there are themes that were release free and were of premium quality. These themes went above and beyond the re-hacked theme and truly earned their place on the web. This will without a doubt attract hundreds to thousands of links over a 6-12 month period…sometimes even quicker.

Now this method is also not for everyone. I had done some sales and link building on the side for my friends web design business. This is the type of site that will really see the link love a flowing as well bring in a lot of clients. I won’t name the theme here but I’m sure some of you have even used it once or twice.
